Last updated On August 2nd, 2020

This is the time to put on some extra weight. However, to enjoy healthy pregnancy make sure that you eat healthy nutritious foods and gains weight rather than thriving on junk foods. If you are obese regulate the weight gain process but do not try to lose weight as it can result in the release of toxins. You can even start counting the baby movements and feel the little elbows, knees or the feet. The growing baby also brings in some changes in the body. Here is a look at the health issues that are observed in the seventh month of pregnancy.

Skin changes –Itchy skin, stretch marks and dark patches (Chloasma)

Hormonal changes and increase in weight cause changes in the skin during pregnancy. Few women develop dark black colored patches on the face and neck regions that generally becomes normal after delivery of the baby. Regular use of sunscreen lotions helps prevent the dark patches. The darkness of the skin is also observed in the region around the nipples. The region around the nipples may become normal after delivery or may remain slightly dark. Few women develop a line in the middle down the abdominal region.

The increasing size of the fetus causes the skin in the stomach region to stretch resulting in the formation of stretch marks. Stretch marks are also observed in the regions of thighs and breasts. Stretch marks generally fade away along with the changes in the skin after delivery. Regular application of aloe vera helps to get rid of stretch marks. The development of stretch marks can be controlled by regulating the weight gain during pregnancy. Healthy weight gain often results in fewer stretch marks.

Dry itchy skin is another problem noticed during the last trimester of pregnancy. Regular application of moisturizer prevents dry, itchy skin. Do not scratch the skin to prevent itching as it could result in scars that fade away after a very long time.

Hot flashes

The rate of blood flow within the body generally increases during the pregnancy to supply blood and sufficient nutrients to the fetus. Increased blood flow along with hormonal changes makes you feel warm and uncomfortable during pregnancy. Hot flashes even make you feel irritated due to excess sweating. This can be controlled by wearing loose breathable cotton clothing. Stay in a cool place. If the weather is hot, consider staying under an electric fan or in an air-conditioned room to feel comfortable. Having a bath with cold water also provides relief from hot flashes.

Placental abruption

Placental abruption refers to the separation of the placenta from the inner uterine wall. It is characterized by symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and tenderness of the uterus region. The consequences of placental abruption depend on the degree of separation. Severe or complete separation of the placenta prevents the fetus from obtaining sufficient nutrients and the oxygen. In such cases, early delivery is recommended. If the separation is mild and the pregnancy has not proceeded too long treatment is done to regulate further separation. Women with such complaints should take complete bed rest and avoid activities such as walking or even the household work.

Gestational diabetes

Elevated blood sugar level during pregnancy is referred to as gestational diabetes. It is very important to keep the blood sugar levels under control during pregnancy as gestational diabetes increases the risk of birth of big babies (macrosomia), sudden rise in blood pressure levels and elevated protein levels in the urine. All these complications, in turn, increase the risk for caesarian birth rather the normal vaginal delivery of the birth.

Treating gestational diabetes is simple and easy. Practice gentle exercises regularly to regulate the metabolic activities of the body. A Healthy diet rich in nutrients and fiber has to be taken to slow down the release of energy from the digested food. Avoid fruits rich in sugar content such as the grapes and apples to keep the blood sugar levels under control. Consider eating whole grain chapati rather than rice.

Premature labor

The seventh month of pregnancy is the time for premature labor. So beware of the symptoms of labor such as increased number of contractions per hour, excruciating pain in the stomach, sudden leakage of amniotic fluid from the vagina, dull backache and high pelvic pressure. Consult the midwife immediately if you observe any of these symptoms. If you are warned of risk for premature labor consider taking rest, avoid lifting heavy objects, and ensure that you gain only healthy weight within the safe limits. However, beware of Braxton Hicks contractions that are similar to the actual contractions observed during labor. By the end of this month, you will be able to identify the Braxton Hicks contractions very easily. If excess weight gain is troubling you, follow the suggestions of a dietician. Make healthy food choices. Never choose fatty foods out of cravings.

All these changes are normal and part of pregnancy. Take it easy and try enjoying the wonderful moments. Have control on mood swings. Things will settle gradually by the end of the seventh month. Take healthy and nutritious diet for a smooth journey. Make note of the appointments with the obstetrician or midwife and never miss them. In the case of any complications, visit the gynecologist immediately without waiting for the symptoms to subside.
